Presentation on Architectural Guidelines for Garlington :
Victoria Country Club :
Wednesday 1 November 2006 :

A splendid time was had by all who attended the Architectural Guidelines for Garlington Presentation by Guy Smith at the Victoria Country Club.

Doug Crowe did a brief introduction after which Guy walked us through the ideas behind the Architectural flow of the Garlington Estate, namely :

  • Locally orientated architectural guidelines, focusing specifically on the best of the old-style farmhouses and small town streets. Guy laid out that the unique charm of places like Stellenbosch and De Waterkant is the sense of community, uniformity and clean simple lines, symmetrical design, recessed courtyards, street front windows and doors.
  • Broken spaces and low structures with emphasis on aesthetics and quality of surroundings for all residents.

An important point which Guy highlighted was :
If we keep our focus on the community when putting together our designs, everyone will benefit. However, if we build with only ourselves in mind, everyone, including ourselves, will lose out in the end. The development will look just like every other estate or residential area in KwaZulu-Natal.

These guidelines will benefit all residents and will ensure that Garlington turns into something unique.

We look greatly forward to the end result which Guy quite effectively painted in his presentation. A unique and locally orientated estate which retains the charm and character of South African architecture.
